Unemployed Teachers Shouldn’t Pay to Be Told “No” – Godknows Ahiagbah Calls for Review of GES Portal Fees

Activist Godknows Ahiagbah, has sparked public discussion over the fees charged to applicants during the Ghana Education Service (GES) recruitment process.

According to Ahiagbah, thousands of trained teachers who applied for employment under the recent GES recruitment exercise were required to purchase portal vouchers costing GH¢25.00 to check the status of their applications. He argued that more than 60 percent of applicants were ultimately informed that they had been disqualified, raising concerns about the financial burden placed on unemployed graduates.

He contended that the current system results in millions of Ghana Cedis being collected from job seekers simply to access a static application outcome, describing the practice as unfair to applicants who are already unemployed.

To address the issue, Ahiagbah proposed two key reforms:

Free application and status checking: Applicants should be able to submit applications and check their employment status at no cost through an online portal or SMS.

Fees only for successful applicants: Any administrative or portal charges should be paid only by successful candidates when printing their official appointment letters.

He maintained that public sector recruitment should support, rather than financially burden, unemployed graduates, and called on the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to review the current portal fee structure.

The proposal has since generated conversations on social media, with many Ghanaians sharing differing opinions on whether recruitment-related portal charges should continue under the existing system.
